In 2019, the European Commission resolve the European Green Deal. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the EU to zero. Europe is to become the first climate-neutral continent. This inevitably means that in the future we will have to reckon with concrete, political specifications, limits, standards and laws for an ecological economy. "Survival of the fittest" means in this context, companies that do not adapt will not survive the ecological economic change. In some industries we plan for product life cycles of 10 or 20 years. Companies managed with a sense of responsibility and foresight are already implementing ecological and sustainable product development today.

Ecodesign for the circular economy

Based on the LCA model and the "Cradle to Cradle" methodology of Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart, we developed the Circular Product Development (CPD) for the development of sustainable product design. We differentiate the five product life phases "product planning", "production", "transport", " usage" and "follow-up use" and thus we design the integration of the products into the circular economy. The CPD is a practical tool for product analysis and product planning. On this basis, 60 assessment criteria for sustainable product design were collected. These are subjected to weighting and evaluation in a scientifically based process.

Approximately 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined during the product design phase (Source: Fraunhofer Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration).
